About Us

We have been serving our area community for many years. We’re thankful to be an important part of this community and will continue our longstanding legacy of helping families honor their loved ones.

Originally known as Thompson and Ricks Funeral Home, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Thompson established the business along with Mr. Tim Ricks. In 1922, Mr. Ricks withdrew from the partnership, and the business became known as Thompson Funeral Home. In the late 1930’s their son joined the business, and the name was changed to Thompson and Son. Bruce Thompson, Jr., was the first college-trained embalmer and funeral director in Northwest Alabama, having trained at Worsmer Embalming College in Chicago, Illinois. In 1938, the Thompsons moved into the location on the corner of Washington and 8th Streets in Tuscumbia, and in 1962, Mrs. Thompson built the funeral home on Poplar Street in Florence. Both locations are still in operation. In 1982, Arthur D. Graves, a retired Air Force Officer and educator, along with his wife, Jean Long Graves, also a retired educator, purchased the business. In doing so, Lt. Col. Graves not only fulfilled a lifelong dream to own his own business but also found a way to serve his community. At Thompson and Son Funeral Home, you will find people who are committed and dedicated to providing outstanding care and professional service.
